Social robots for education

The Ucoerm Congress was attended by Pepper and the International Director of Google for education.

More than 1,350 people participated in the 4th Educational Congress of the Union of Teaching Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia (Ucoerm) held on July 2nd and 3rd in the Víctor Villegas Auditorium and Congress Centre. The event was attended by the social robot Pepper, as an example of a solution to encourage innovation and incorporate new technologies into the classroom, and by the main experts in the sector who stressed the need to increase the use of technologies in Spanish education. 

Under the slogan "Education: a necessary change", the fourth edition of the reference congress for the educational community in Murcia was dedicated to the application of technologies in education and the future jobs to adapt the educational offer to future professional profiles. Pepper acted as master of ceremonies for the event and opened the Congress together with the President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, the Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport, Adela Martínez-Cacha, and the International Director of Google for Education, John Vamvakitis. 

Technology at the service of education

During his first visit to Spain, the international head of education at Google praised the efforts being made to incorporate new technologies into Spanish education, but believes that "there is still much to do". Vamvakitis stressed the need to create a culture of innovation among teachers to take advantage of the potential of technology in education. 

Social robots, such as Pepper and NAO, allow the educational community to incorporate new technologies and innovation into the classroom. Its ability to empathize and interact with the students, energize the learning process, offer personalized attention and motivate students make humanoid robots an efficient solution to bring artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art technology to the classroom.  The integration of other solutions such as Google Assistant or chatbots increases the potential for robot use in the education sector.

In addition, robots are a solution for language learning as they have the ability to dialogue in 20 languages and a tool for profiles interested in more technical areas such as programmers, developers or robotics experts. 

Google research in the schools where its technologies are applied show that student motivation increases with the incorporation of new technologies and the favorable impact on academic results.
